1. Hippocratic Oath Medical T-Shirt

A few words about the design of this Hippocratic Oath medical T-Shirt.

All great ancient civilizations developed their own ways of healing the ill. Early medical “schools” are those of Babylon, China, Egypt and India. In India the concepts of medical diagnosis and prognosis were first introduced.

The beginning of “Modern Western Medicine” can be traced to Hippocrates (c. 460 – c. 370 BC), the “father of modern medicine” who was the first known to systematize the medical process in an almost scientific way.

In Hippocrates works the detailed approach he took with patients (and medicine in general) can be found:

Observation and description of all details, classification, a thesis about the observation and then a “scientific” research to prove the thesis.

Besides the “scientific” work, Hippocrates' philosophical work about medical ethics is a cornerstone of medical science.

Physicians today take the famous “Hippocratic Oath”, a text written about 400 B.C.E. and this is only a part of the enormous written work by this great physician and philosopher.

The Hippocratic Oath is the earliest expression of medical ethics in the western world and the oldest partial fragments of the oath date to circa AD 275.

Many believe the phrase "First do no harm" (Latin: Primum non nocere) is a part of the original Hippocratic oath.

This is incorrect since the exact quote does not appear in the AD 275 version of the oath. But the meaning is there: "I will abstain from all intentional wrong-doing and harm".

The quote can be found in "Of the epidemics" book of Hippocrates (Book1, Section II, 5):

..."The physician must be able to tell the antecedents, know the present, and foretell the future- must mediate these things, and have two special objects in view with regard to disease, namely, to do good or to do no harm."...

This T-Shirt shows the “Do No Harm” quote in parallel with the snake of Asclepius, the universal symbol of medicine.

The snake figure was associated with Asclepios, the ancient Greek God of medicine. Greeks regarded snakes as sacred and used them in healing rituals to honor Asclepius.

The main reason for the association of snakes with health is that it gets renewed and rejuvenated by sloughing its skin off, a process that symbolizes the metamorphosis among birth, life and death.

This renewal of skin is also a symbol of eternal youth and was directly associated with health in the ancient Greek world.

Snake venom was also considered a pharmaceutical substance.

2. Plato About Medicine T Shirt

Plato (5th century BCE) was one of the most influential humans in history.

He was student of Socrates and teacher of Aristotle.

Twenty-four centuries ago Plato wrote about subjects of illness, healing and the human being and his thoughts can be unexpectedly relevant in contemporary medical ethics.

His "Dialogs" are ingrained with two key implicit notions that are essential to medicine: holism and care and this is only the tip of an iceberg regarding Plato's work.

Hygeia was the daughter of Asclepius, the "incomparable doctor" according to Homer. Asclepius was also the God of healing.

Hygeia as a goddess was specialized in prevention:

According to the myth Hygeia (or sometimes spelled Hygieia), used baths and healing springs, touch and massage;

she promoted healthy eating and focused on everything that was conducive to positive attitude; It was observed that only self-positive thinkers had a good course.

The bowl of hygeia (commonly depicted with the snake of Asclepius) is the most widely recognized international symbol for the profession of Pharmacy today.

The English word "Hygiene" is of Greek origin and comes from the word "Hygeia".

Greeks still use everyday Hygeia's name - after 2500 years - through the internationally known greeting "Geia soy" (Γεια σου):

You can say geia soy or simply hygeia every time you make a toast (cheers), you greet somebody (hello) or say goodbye.
