HERMES was in Greek mythology the God of trade, travel and luck. He was the messenger who guided travelers, but also the dead to next life. Being a good diplomat, he was known for languages and rhetorics, knew music and invented the lyre. However, he also protected the house and the shepherds. In his „Iliad“ Homer named him „The Bringer of good luck“.
This torso is based on Hermes of Praxiteles, discovered in 1877 in the ruins of the Temple of Hera, Olympia, in Greece, dated to the 4th century BC and sculpted from a block of the best quality of Parian marble. From the front the god looks serene, from the right side it appears that he is sad and from the left side his face looks as if he is smiling.
